It’s not easy evaluating something as subjective as sound. We each have our own personal taste in music and the way it sounds. I have attempted to add some objectivity by defining some aspects of tube performance that affect any listener, regardless of application, budget or musical taste. The EL34 is a very popular tube and is used in equipment that creates as well as reproduces music. This testing was done using tube guitar amplifiers. With this in mind, consideration has been given to construction quality and mechanical noise. These factors are important to musicians but may not be an issue when a tube is used in the home or studio.

12AY7 Tube Reviews

The 12AY7 and 6072 are the tube designations for a dual triode with medium gain that shares the same pin-out configuration as the 12AX7 and its variants. Pretty boring as a description goes. To put it differently, the 12AY7 can often replace a 12AX7 in your amplifier and give you a rich, warm tone with lower gain than a 12AX7. The 12AY7 tubes are not 12AX7’s and have many different properties. They draw more current than a 12AX7 as well as having different internal capacitance between elements and a different plate dissipation. Because of these differences, they sound different in a circuit designed for a 12AX7 tube. The 12AY7 tube could cause problems in related gain stages by changing the operation of those other stages, but this is rarely an issue.

All things considered, the 12AY7 has what I would call a blues sound. Warm, rich, and smooth while still delivering a good strong signal. Let’s look at a few:

Lược sử ampli đèn

Năm 1904, bóng đèn 2 cực chân không (diode) đầu tiên ra đời, bắt đầu thời kỳ điện tử học. Hai năm sau, bóng đèn 3 cực (triode) xuất hiện, khởi nguồn cho thời hoàng kim của ampli đèn và các thiết bị sử dụng đèn điện tử khác.

Bóng đèn 2 cực được nhà khoa học Anh John Ambrose Fleming phát minh đúng 100 năm trước. Năm 1906, Lee de Forest sáng chế ra đèn 3 cực, bóng chân không cho phép nhận và khuyếch đại tín hiệu điện tử. Nhưng phải chờ đến những năm 20 của thế kỷ trước, những chiếc ampli đèn đầu tiên mới được bán trên thị trường. Chúng có thiết kế đơn giản song đảm nhiệm chức năng khuếch đại tín hiệu rất thành công. Tất cả các sơ đồ thiết kế chỉ sử dụng một loại đèn duy nhất được sản xuất thời bấy giờ là đèn 3 cực đốt trực tiếp (direct heating triode) và chỉ chạy duy nhất ở class A. Khi ấy, người chơi phải dùng ampli đèn một cách rất cẩn thận vì đèn còn hiếm và giá rất cao.
